Match Preview: Millwall (H)

Barnet v Millwall

The Hive

Tuesday 9th August 2016

Kick Off: 20:00

EFL Cup 1st Round

Team News: Long term absentee Gavin Hoyte is once again unavailable for this match. James Pearson missed the Cambridge United match with a knee injury that has kept him out of action for much of pre-season. Jamie Stephens is still recovering from his operation this summer – Josh Vickers should continue in goal for the Bees.

Last Time We Met: One of the most enjoyable away matches last season was the Bees’ trip to The Den in the 1st Round of the League Cup. Barnet – newly promoted to the Football League – beat a Millwall side that had just been relegated from the Championship. John Akinde slotted home a penalty in the 11th minute, but the Lions equalised in the second half through Steve Morison. The game went to extra time and the Bees found a winner – Andy Yiadom tapping in the final goal of the match on 102 minutes. Read the report from that game here.

Opposition Form: Millwall went into Saturday’s opening match of the campaign having enjoyed a reasonably good pre-season. Neil Harris’ men won three of their five friendly matches – beating Bromley (2-1), Dartford (3-0) and Crawley Town (3-2). However they lost and drew their final two warm-up matches against Dover Athletic (0-2) and Brentford (1-1).

Dangerman: Striker Lee Gregory was third in the League One scoring charts last season with 18 goals. The former Halifax Town forward has already found the net in the first game at the Den this season.

Last Time Out: Millwall recorded a convincing 3-0 victory at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Lee Gregory opened the scoring for the Lions with a 13th minute penalty, before Aiden O’Brien doubled their lead deep into first half stoppage time. Byron Webster sealed the win with Millwall’s third on 46 minutes.

Meanwhile the Bees drew 1-1 on the road at Cambridge United. You can read the match report from that game here, or check out the goals from The Abbey below:
