Parkinson’s footballing career began in 1985 at Southampton, a club he would make 0 appearances for before being shipped off to Bury in 1988. The Englishman played for Bury for 4 years and made a total of 145 appearances for the club before leaving for Reading in 1992, a club which he would make most of his appearances at. The Chorley born man amassed a total of 361 appearances for the side and retired in 20023 to enter management.

 

The former midfielder began his venture into management with Colchester United and steered them to safety upon his arrival in February 2003. In his 3rd season in charge, he took the club to an unlikely promotion to the Championship after finishing in 2nd place in League One. Despite promoting the club, he left with a year on his contract to join Hull City.

 

Parkinson’s spell at Hull was unsuccessful and he left within the year and went on to represent the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland and now Wrexham.
